Breast Reduction

Breast reduction, also known in medical language as Mammoplasty, is an plastic surgery for women to reduce the size of large breasts, improve their shape and size, and re-establish a functional bust that is proportionate to the woman’s body. Women can undergo breast reduction only after completing 18 years of age. The surgical breast reduction is often a vital treatment for large, sagging breasts which causes discomfort to women. This can be effective in elimination of negative physical symptoms such as neck and back pain, the shoulder problems caused by the brass straps, and the marks forming underneath the breasts. Breast reduction is also useful to correct breasts which have different sizes from each other. For patients who are losing weight it is recommended that they reach a healthy situation and their ideal weight before undergoing the surgical intervention. Pregnancy and breast feeding can have an important impact on the breast size and shape. Thus it is recommended that women who want to have more children postpone the intervention till they have reached the desirable number of children.

Patients’ Choices and Surgical Techniques
There are several breast reduction methods. The surgeon decides upon the method to be used after consulting with the patient in order to fit both the patient’s body and the type of breast. The most widely used techniques are via vertical incision around areola or traditional (inverted T shape). During the consultation the doctor will investigate the pros and cons of every breast reduction surgery and will help you take the right decision.

Breast reduction surgery lasts approximately 3 to 4 hours and takes place under general anaesthesia. After the surgery, the patients have to stay in the clinic for one night. The breast reduction intervention does not interfere with breast-feeding; nor does it increase the risk for breast tumour. All kinds of examinations can be undergone after breast augmentation, such as mammography and ultrasound.

Post-Surgical Recovery

The recovery period lasts from four days to one week and most of the patients start to feel well within 4 to 5 days. Three days after the surgical intervention the patient must come back to the clinic for wound treatment. During the recovery period it is important to use specific bras that help keeping the breasts motionless. Also, the first menstrual cycle after the intervention is expected to cause more swelling and breast pain than usual. We recommend you avoid heavy physical activities for two to three weeks after the intervention. The doctor will follow up on you during the recovery period, recommending the right time to restart your normal activity.
The results are stable overall; however, a lot depends on the patient’s skin and life style.
